For the business person today, therefore, proficient alround skills in English have become essential. As many Swiss businesses are global, or are working with international companies or trading abroad, Swiss executives and managers are finding that a good knowledge of English is becoming increasingly necessary. Even within Switzerland, English is being used along with French, German and Italian as a language of commercial and intercultural communication. It is not surprising, therefore, that English is becoming increasingly important as a language to be taught in Swiss schools, colleges of further education and academia. It has high priority in the English Courses at the HFW and students at the HFW will be expected to reach the Appropriate Level of advanced competence in written and spoken English by the end of their studies. The HFW English Syllabus will be designed to help the students to achieve these aims, but the individual student must realise that learning a language, especially at this advanced level, requires constant practice both in and outside the school curriculum.
